Audience Research

Above is a chart of statistics which shows us what type/types of people visit the Red Hot Chili Peppers' website. It is split up into gender, sex, ethnicity and house hold income. So according to the data, the most likely type of person to listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers is a 13-17 year old hispanic female who's family has a household "middle income" which is between $30k and $60k. All the information is based only on American visitors to the redhotchilipeppers.com website.

But still, even though this is the most likely type of person to visit the website, it's still close between each gender and age groups. However, there is still a strong connection between ethnicity and popularity of the band and the song, "Charlie". By using these statistics, you can clearly see that the ethnic majority is from Western culture, and Eastern culture isn't as easily attracted to this type of genre. From studying in the past, countries such as Japan prefer generally speaking an almost mixed genre, which takes the two scenes and joins them together into one style. A popular band to do this would be Kat-Tun, which is the most popular band in Japan and most of Asia at the moment - a band which uses a Rock/Electronic/Pop blend to create something different, original, and most importantly popular.

An example of Kat-Tun's songs can be seen underneath:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Charlie

After a lot of research into different genres and artists we decided to use the song "Charlie" by the red hot chili peppers. We decided to go with this because we are now going to try and do a story/narrative led music video. We also have permission to use the song because the red hot chili peppers started a competition on their YouTube page for their subscribers and on their official website to their members to make a music video for the song. To see the article explaining the contest details please click here

For the contest winning video click here

Now we will do some research into the Red Hot Chili Peppers music videos to see if we can find any trends and we will also do some audience research to find out what people we will be aiming the video at. Once we have done this we can then write a treatment with our plan on it and then start the practical preparation for the video.

Genre Research

Music videos always represent the genre of the music, because of this we have changed our mind on the type of genre. We decided to go with a less effects driven style of editing, and have decided to go with a song and band that are more story/performance driven.

In addition, we have looked at some professionally made music videos from different genres to pick out similarities. The first music video we looked at was Joy Division's "Love will tear us apart." Joy Division are a rock band and because they are this genre they have done a performance led video. They have done this to show the skill of the musicians playing their instruments and we see a lot of close up shots and low angles shots. The band also keep a serious look on their face through out the entire video, this represents their genre as if they were doing a pop video you would expect them to be smiling and jumping around with happy pink bunny rabbits.

The next music video we looked at Notorious B.I.G. "Juicy" In most hip hop videos we expect to see things such as
  • Guns
  • Girls
  • Violence
  • drugs
  • expensive cars
  • "bling"
And after watching a few hip hop videos, quite a lot of these appeared in the videos. All of the things listed above seem to be symbolic to the hip hop genre.

The next genre we looked at was electronic. We looked at three different music videos for this and they were, Fat Boy Slim's "Don't Let The Man Get You Down" - "Weapon Of Choice" and Audio Bullys "We Don't Care"

the official music video for "Don't Let The Man Get You Down" were banned from embedding, so click here to see it.

With the electronic genre, the usual trend is to not show to show the artist as there is no performance element to any of the videos listed above. With this type of genre the music video is usually narrative based. The video could have worked without the music and with dialogue, it has been as if a short story.

Specifically with the Fat Boy Slim music video "Weapon Of Choice", the video was made to have a comedy element to it by using the actor Christopher Walken. It is supposed to be funny because in most of the films he is in he always seems to play a fairly psychopathic antagonist. So when you see him in this, it has subverted his stereotypical appearance to someone dancing around and acting silly.

We learnt from our genre research, typical techniques used for specific genres and how it varies from genre to genre.

Prodigy - Take Me To The Hospital

06/07/2010

We sent numerous amounts of emails to Prodigy's record label to try and get permission to use the song "Take Me To The Hospital" and we also gave them a phone call, however we couldn't get anyone to talk to, reply or give us any sort of answer. So we are now back to choosing another song and we are deciding on doing a Performance/Concept led music video. We also changed uor minds about doing the electronic genre with an effects based video because we felt it would be too advanced and we could achieve a better video if we chose another genre.

Today we discussed and researched different songs to try and choose another song that we could choose to make our music video.
